At present, the global power system is actively expanding and upgrading the substation infrastructure to improve the stability and security of the power system. A recent report by Navigant Research, a market Research firm specialising in clean energy, predicted global revenues of $20.3 BN FOR SMART Transformers and switches in 2016, with that target expected to rise to $24.1 BN by 2025. According to Richelle Elberg, chief analyst at Navigant Research, there will be a massive investment boom in the next decade as traditional transformers and switchgear are replaced. "But smart automated transformers and switches have become the norm for the new generation of substations, " Richelle notes, "because of the growing demand from operators for reliability and security in grid-connected and grid-system operations and the increasing emphasis placed on this by the government. In the next decade, competition between smart transformers and smart switches and traditional products will become increasingly fierce,"the report said, adding that high costs remain a major constraint to the development of the market for smart transformers and switching equipment. So while the market will continue to grow steadily over the next decade, it probably won't grow very fast.
