Since the 1990s, heuristic method, artificial neural network (ANN)/ expert system method, methods based on stochastic optimization technology, including genetic algorithm, SimulatedAnnealing (SA) and TabuSerch (IS), have been applied to the optimal allocation of capacitors in distribution network. Compared with analytical method and mathematical programming method, heuristic method and expert system method are intuitive, easy to understand and easy to implement, but they cannot guarantee the optimal solution. For a distribution network with a certain size, it is difficult to get all the possible load patterns, and the training samples also need a lot of time. The methods based on stochastic optimization technology are especially suitable for combinatorial optimization problems because they can effectively deal with non-differentiable objective functions. The practice proves that these stochastic optimization methods have better global searching ability than traditional optimization methods, but their convergence and calculation speed need to be further improved.
